The Sheep Barn was in pretty bad shape when last I saw it a couple weeks ago. What was left, maybe the northern 20% of the original building, had a big hole in the western exterior wall. The last two days, we’ve had very strong, gusty winds. Winds like this are what blew down the already collapsed part of the building. I’ve been wondering if the storm has done in the last of the sheep barn. True, there wasn’t much left, anyway, but if it collapses, and gets scooped away quickly, as happened with the rest of the building, there will be nothing left at all. Just an odd rectangle of concrete out in a field.
The Lodge was lost to arson. The Sheep Barn has been, at least mostly, lost due to neglect and weather. The Gate House is suffering severe damage due to neglect, although it may have a chance, thanks to the efforts of volunteers with the Friends of Highland Recreation Area. As fun as it may be exploring ruins, it’s better still not losing the historic structures in the first place.
