I was out finishing up mapping the mountain bike and equestrian trails when I ran into this:
I smelled it long before I saw it. By the time I got there, it was burned out and cold enough it wasn’t about to relight. Fortunately, the trails are so dense in this area the fire didn’t get to really get going, and the trails were enough to act as firebreaks. Still, as you can see in the last picture, it charred one tree. If that tree had ignited, it could have been a major forest fire!
Given the area, I can only think of one thing that could have possibly lit it. A carelessly tossed cigarette. Where’s Smokey the Bear when you need him?
